Quick Answers

I've never done karate before. Where do I start?
Most adults start in Adult Karate Beginner. Children ages 4–9 start in OSU! Kids; ages 10 and up start in Junior Karate. Your first class is free — book a trial and we'll place you correctly.
How long until my child or I can earn a black belt?
Black belt (1st Dan) typically takes 5–7 years of consistent training and 10 KYU grading tests. EKKC trains for the long road — many of our students have been with us 10, 15, even 20+ years. Belt rank is earned, never given.
What's the difference between Kyokushin and other karate styles?
Kyokushin is full-contact karate — known for its powerful strikes, conditioning, and emphasis on mental toughness. Founded by Mas Oyama in 1953, Kyokushin produces some of the most respected fighters in martial arts. EKKC is affiliated with IKO 1, headquartered in Tokyo.
What are the class times and prices?
See our full Class Schedule for class times. Pricing varies by program — OSU! Kids starts at $65/month, adult and youth memberships start at $80/month. There is no registration fee.
Where is the dojo?
We train at the Lakewood Community League, 260 Lakewood Road East, Edmonton, AB T6K 4C2. Free parking on site. Easy to reach from anywhere in southeast Edmonton.
What should I wear to a free trial class?
Comfortable workout clothes — a t-shirt and athletic pants or shorts. Bare feet in the dojo. We'll provide a uniform (gi) when you decide to enroll.
