Why Adult Karate Beginner
Three Reasons Adults Choose Kyokushin
Most fitness routines plateau. Most martial arts classes are full of teenagers. Adult Karate Beginner at EKKC is different — built for grown-ups who want training that compounds over years.
Training that compounds
Every class adds to a real Kyokushin syllabus. After six months you can do things you couldn't do before. After three years you're a different person — physically and mentally. This is not a cycle of forgettable workouts.
An adult environment
The 8:30 PM time slot is intentional. You're training with other working adults who showed up after their day was done. No teenagers, no distractions. The dojo culture is serious, respectful, and welcoming to beginners.
A 40-year tradition
EKKC has trained Edmonton adults since 1983. Many of our current black belts started here in their thirties or forties. Kyokushin doesn't care how old you are when you start — only how committed you are.

What a Class Looks Like
You arrive a few minutes early. You bow as you step onto the mat. The class lines up by rank — you're at the back as a beginner, and that's exactly where you should be.
Class opens with a formal bow-in led by the instructor. Then 15 minutes of warm-up: stretches, breathing exercises, and basic conditioning. Your first few classes will feel intense. After a month, you'll wonder how it ever did.
The middle of class is kihon — fundamental techniques. Stances, punches, kicks, blocks. We drill these to muscle memory because in Kyokushin, fundamentals are everything. You'll work in lines, then with a partner, then sometimes solo.
Class ends with light kumite — sparring drills. Beginners go non-contact. As you progress, you'll start putting power behind your strikes — but only when you and your partner are ready. Final bow-out, kiai, and you're done.
