Meet your instructors.
Edmonton Kyokushin Karate Club has been led by senior instructors since 1983. Every class is taught by a black or brown belt with years of experience and serious training behind them — never handed off to a teenager or a novice. Real ranks. Real teaching. Real depth.
The four senior instructors below lead our core programs week-to-week. Below them, our extended teaching team — brown, black, and senior KYU belts — supports children's, intermediate, and Fight Team classes year-round.
Program leads
Each of our four core programs is led by a senior instructor. They set the curriculum, run the room, and personally mentor the next generation of teachers.
Shihan Irek
Heads Advanced Karate and Adult Fighting. Member of EKKC since 1990 who has personally trained generations of Edmonton families. IKO 1 affiliated.
Senpai Amy
OSU! Kids program lead. Children's Syllabus specialist with deep experience guiding ages 4–9 through their first years of karate.
Senpai Phil
Adult Karate Beginner program lead. Monday and Wednesday evenings. Specializes in welcoming first-time adult students and rebuilding fundamentals.
Senpai Stefan
Intermediate program lead. Guides students through the 7th-to-5th KYU progression with technical depth and a steady hand on the mat.

What you experience at EKKC is the same standard Kyokushin training that has produced champions worldwide since Mas Oyama founded the style in 1964.
Structured curriculum
Two parallel paths: the Children's Syllabus for under-tens, and the Adult KYU system for ages ten and up. Every belt has a clear set of techniques, kata, and fitness standards. No guessing what's next.
Mentorship lineage
Every senior instructor learned from the one before them. Shihan Irek has taught most of our brown and black belts personally. The teaching standard is preserved by direct apprenticeship, not videos or franchises.
IKO 1 affiliated
EKKC is part of the International Karate Organization Kyokushinkaikan (IKO 1), the worldwide federation founded by Mas Oyama himself. Belt ranks earned here are recognized internationally.

Brown belts, black belts, and senior KYU students who assist on the mat, lead drills, mentor newer students, and step in when our senior leads are away.
